About the Role

Our client’s Data Lab is on a mission to unlock the power of data science and analytics, driving innovation in the mobility sector. As a Data Scientist – Business Analyst, you’ll be at the forefront of developing advanced big data and AI solutions that shape the future of public works and mobility. This freelance assignment is based in Brussels, with a 10-month duration, and offers you the chance to lead, innovate, and deliver real impact.

In this role, you’ll solve complex business challenges by transforming raw data into strategic recommendations, deploying cutting-edge AI models, and ensuring that data-driven decisions empower public sector innovation. Your expertise will directly influence how departments operate, optimize, and serve millions.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Lead the design, development, and deployment of advanced AI and machine learning models for big data analysis projects.
• Collaborate with business experts and stakeholders to translate business questions into actionable data and technical requirements.
• Independently identify opportunities where AI can add value and drive these initiatives from concept to production.
• Develop intuitive UI interfaces for AI services using modern frameworks and tools.
• Optimize and tune databases and queries for high-performance analytics.
• Analyze complex data streams and extract actionable insights using state-of-the-art techniques.
• Visualize and communicate model results and insights through user-friendly dashboards and reports.
• Lead and mentor teams on complex, innovative projects, ensuring delivery of impactful solutions.
• Regularly engage with stakeholders to gather requirements, provide updates, and iterate on solutions.
• Ensure the successful translation of modeling results into tangible business outcomes.

Technical Skills

• Deep learning and neural networks (preferably PyTorch and JAX), generative AI (retrieval augmented generation RAG), and Agentic products (agents, harness, etc.)
• UI development for AI services (Azure AI Foundry, Reflex.dev, Javascript/CSS including Tailwind CSS, Chadui/cn, next.js)
• AI prototyping (Claude code, Codex, pi.dev, etc.)
• Database optimization and query tuning (Expert level)
• Data stream analysis (Expert level)
• Production deployment of GEN AI products
• ML modeling: statistics, predictive analytics, time series prediction, computer vision (Scikit-learn, OpenCV)
• Analytics platforms: Azure ML, Databricks (Spark), Jupyter notebooks, DuckDB
• Visualization and reporting: Python packages (Altair, Matplotlib, KeplerGL), Markdown
• Database experience: SQL, Oracle
• Scripting: Shell, Perl, Python
• Data manipulation and processing: ETL, SQL, Pandas, Numpy, Scipy

Language Proficiency

• Dutch at European CEFR level C2 (mandatory)

Other Requirements

• At least 8 years of demonstrable experience in stakeholder communication
• At least 8 years of demonstrable experience in ML modeling and data manipulation
• At least 8 years of demonstrable experience in leading teams on complex, innovative projects
• At least 8 years of demonstrable experience in translating modeling results into business results
• Experience with data science projects in the mobility sector is highly valued
• Experience with reporting and analytics in public sector environments
