Project Development Manager – BESS

Leap29 is working with an established developer and manufacturer of battery storage facilities who is seeking an experienced Project Development Manager to lead the development of large-scale BESS projects from origination through to ready-to-build status.
The Role
The Project Development Manager will play a key role in identifying, developing, and advancing BESS opportunities across Austria. You will manage projects throughout the development lifecycle, including site identification, land acquisition, permitting, grid connection, stakeholder management, and coordination with internal and external partners.
This role requires a strong understanding of renewable energy project development, energy markets, and grid infrastructure, alongside excellent communication and negotiation skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development of utility-scale BESS projects across Austria
- Identify and assess new project opportunities and suitable sites
- Manage landowner negotiations and secure land agreements
- Coordinate grid connection applications and liaise with TSOs/DSOs
- Oversee permitting and environmental assessment processes
- Manage external consultants, legal advisors, and technical partners
- Build and maintain relationships with municipalities, regulators, and stakeholders
- Conduct project feasibility and commercial assessments
- Support financial modelling, investment approvals, and project acquisitions
- Monitor Austrian energy market developments, regulations, and policy changes
- Collaborate closely with engineering, finance, and construction teams to ensure successful project delivery
- Prepare development reports and present project updates to senior management
Requirements
- Degree in Engineering, Renewable Energy, Environmental Science, Business, or related field
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in utility-scale BESS project development
- Strong knowledge of the Austrian energy market and permitting environment
- Existing network within Austrian utilities, grid operators, or energy sector stakeholders
- Experience managing grid connection processes and stakeholder engagement
- Commercially minded with strong project management capabilities
- Excellent negotiation and communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
- Fluent in German and English
- Willingness to travel within Austria as required
