Who’ll You Be Joining:

The Energy Services team's vision is for thoughtful homes to work together for 100% clean and affordable energy. Our team is entirely focused on planet positivity, and you will be a key contributor in bringing that vision to life. eco+ has already helped millions of users use cleaner and cheaper energy and is growing fast to keep energy costs low for more homeowners across North America.

The eco+ product is used by more than 70 utility partners and is revolutionizing how the grid responds to peak demand, thanks to Machine Learning models that optimize comfort and energy savings for customers. You would be joining as a member on a small but growing team, helping shape a culture that empowers the team to make great technical decisions, drive strategic choices, actively improve on our processes and mentor others.

You will be working closely with the marketing and sales teams, hearing client feedback firsthand, allowing you to collaborate with the Product Manager to consistently improve the product and the roadmap.

The Energy Services team is highly data-driven and is consistently focused on improving our culture and processes. You'll benefit from monthly learning days, regular guest speakers from the energy industry, strategic offsites, as well as other opportunities for growth and development!

This role follows a hybrid schedule, with in-office work required on Wednesdays and Thursdays from our Toronto office to support collaboration, and flexibility to work remotely for the remainder of the week.

How You'll Make An Impact

As a Senior Backend Engineer, you'll:

  • Design, build, and evolve high-load, highly concurrent backend services that directly support ecobee's products and business goals.
  • Use modern technologies to solve complex technical challenges at scale, with the flexibility to evaluate and adopt new tools when they meaningfully improve outcomes.
  • Contribute to and help shape ecobee's engineering culture by sharing knowledge, learning from peers, and applying thoughtful engineering practices.
  • Influence technical direction and decision-making, with your ideas and contributions having a measurable impact on the company's systems and objectives.

Our team believes strongly in operational excellence — we take full ownership of the services and systems we build, right through to production. From monitoring and troubleshooting our services running in the cloud, to analyzing real-time fleet metrics and responding to incidents, you'll be part of a culture where reliability is a shared responsibility and on-call is a point of pride, not a burden.

What You'll Bring To The Table

You don’t need to tick every box, but you should bring strong fundamentals and a bias toward delivery:

  • You're fluent in Go, our primary backend language, and comfortable using Java, Python, or JavaScript when needed.
  • You continuously challenge yourself and the status quo, seeking better ways to solve complex problems. Systems design and architecture are areas where you're comfortable and confident.
  • You're open to learning new technologies when it helps you deliver solutions more effectively.
  • You thrive on large, complex challenges and are comfortable working with issues of scale, concurrency, large data sets, security, redundancy, and failover—key considerations for a successful IoT platform.
  • You have strong experience designing, implementing, and debugging microservices using Google Cloud Platform and/or AWS, along with both NoSQL and relational databases.
  • You value the craft of software development and actively practice automated testing, CI/CD, and sound design patterns.
  • You understand the full lifecycle of getting code to production—from review and merge through deployment in the cloud or a data center—and can identify opportunities to improve reliability and delivery.
  • You care deeply about system stability and customer experience, which includes working with metrics, participating in a healthy on-call rotation, and building robust, resilient systems.
  • You prioritize the team by providing mentorship, support, and guidance, while helping focus efforts on the highest-impact work and supporting overall team well-being.

AI‑Assisted Development Expectations

  • Hands-on experience using AI tools (e.g., Claude, Copilot, or similar) in real development workflows.
  • Ability to critically assess AI output and validate it with tests, reviews, and incremental rollout.
  • Interest in turning AI usage into repeatable team leverage, not just personal productivity.
