Scala Engineer (New Platform Build)

We’re supporting a major UK streaming and digital media platform on the continued growth of their subscription services ecosystem and are looking for a Senior Scala Engineer with strong Functional Programming experience. You’ll be joining a cross-functional product engineering team responsible for building and scaling subscription and payment services used by millions of users across a large-scale consumer platform.

You’ll work on modern Scala microservices running within AWS and Kubernetes environments, contributing to backend API development, new subscription capabilities, and operational platform support. This is a strong opportunity for engineers who enjoy building scalable backend systems within modern cloud-native product environments.

Key Experience Needed

• Strong commercial Scala engineering experience
• Strong Functional Programming experience within Scala
• Experience building scalable backend APIs and microservices
• Experience working with modern Scala libraries/frameworks such as Cats, Doobie, http4s, Blaze, and Tapir
• AWS and Kubernetes experience
• Experience working within Agile/SCRUM environments
• Strong collaboration and communication skills
• Experience delivering features within cross-functional product engineering teams
• Experience working on subscription, transactional, or payment-based platforms would be highly beneficial
• Exposure to third-party integrations and external provider platforms would be advantageous

Key Responsibilities

• Design and build new backend endpoints supporting customer subscription and account journeys
• Develop and maintain Scala microservices within AWS/Kubernetes environments
• Collaborate closely with Product, Frontend Engineers, and Technical Leads
• Contribute to technical design discussions and platform scalability improvements
• Support operational stability of transactional service platforms and resolve production issues when required
• Deliver clean, scalable, production-quality backend code
• Help improve and scale existing backend services across a large-scale consumer platform
• Work effectively within Agile product engineering teams to deliver roadmap features
