Job Overview

Maternity services at Wexham Park Hospital The maternity service at Wexham Park Hospital caters to a large, multicultural and multinational population.

We attend to over 5000 deliveries per year. The consultant led labour ward has 10 delivery rooms, a pool room, a dedicated emergency obstetric theatre and a smaller second theatre for cases such as manual removal of placenta or perineal tear repair.

Our caesarean section rate is 35 - 38% along with approximately 25 - 30% epidural rate for labour analgesia. Obstetric anaesthetic antenatal clinics are provided for the high risk parturient. HDU care can be provided on labour ward or within the main ICU which is close by.

The Birthing Centre, situated near ward 22, is a midwifery led birthing suite suitable for low risk pregnancies.

Main duties of the job

Provision Of Analgesia During Labour Including

  • Performing and managing epidurals and combined spinal epidurals
  • Initiation and maintenance of either morphine PCA (in the case of intra-uterine death) or remifentanil PCA
  • Provision of anaesthesia for emergency caesarean section (category 1 – 3), operative delivery in theatre and for any postnatal surgery for example manual removal of placenta or perineal tear repair
  • Postnatal follow up of all patients on ward 22 who have had an anaesthetic intervention and documentation of review on EPIC.

Education And Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Primary medical qualification recognised by the GMC

Desirable criteria

  • Obtained awards/prizes during training

Professional/statutory registration

Essential criteria

  • Full registration and licence to practice with the GMC

Previous clinical training / experience

Essential criteria

  • Primary FRCA or equivalent
  • 3 years practice as anaesthetist including experience undertaking on-call shifts in theatres, labour ward and ICU.
  • One year experience of working in anaesthetics in the NHS, equivalent to CT3/ST3 or above,

Desirable criteria

  • 3 years practice as anaesthetist in the NHS
  • Final FRCA or equivalent

Experience in obstetric anaesthesia

Essential criteria

  • Evidence of commitment to obstetric anaesthesia, including logbook of cases and blocks, and attendance at courses
  • Proficient in the practice of regional anaesthesia for obstetrics including spinals, epidurals and combined spinal-epidurals

Desirable criteria

  • Faculty on obstetric anaesthesia course e.g. PROMT/SimMOA

Experience in audit, QUIP and research

Essential criteria

  • Evidence of participation in audit and QIPs
  • Understands clinical governance
  • Critically appraises and understands relevance of evidence base and applies it to clinical practice appropriately.

Desirable criteria

  • Experience writing policies, protocols or guidelines
  • Experience in research, including postgraduate degree e.g. MD, PhD
  • Presentations at regional and national meetings
  • Publications in peer reviewed journal

Skills, knowledge and personal attributes

Essential criteria

  • Able to teach colleagues from a range of specialties and grades
  • Clinical skills commensurate with a specialty trainee
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrates professionalism in all interactions with colleagues, patients and relatives
  • Recognises limitations of own clinical knowledge and experience and seeks help when needed
