Overview

A large, well-established organisation is undertaking a major technology transformation programme, modernising legacy platforms and embedding cloud-native and AI-assisted engineering practices across the technology function. This is a long-term modernisation initiative within a stable enterprise environment with strong engineering leadership, mature delivery practices, and significant investment in next-generation technology capabilities. This role is suited to a strong Technical Lead who enjoys driving engineering improvements, mentoring teams, modernising legacy systems, and introducing AI-assisted development practices into enterprise software delivery.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Leadership & Delivery

• Lead a team of software engineers across delivery, technical quality, and engineering standards
• Remain hands-on in software design, development, and technical problem-solving
• Drive improvements across CI/CD, automated testing, DevOps, and engineering workflows
• Ensure solutions are scalable, secure, maintainable, and aligned with business priorities
• Support delivery planning, technical estimation, and execution across multiple initiatives

Cloud & Platform Modernisation

• Lead migration and modernisation of legacy applications into modern Azure-based architectures
• Support cloud-native engineering practices and platform standardisation
• Define and promote engineering guardrails around scalability, resilience, observability, and security
• Contribute to operational reliability, cloud optimisation, and platform performance improvements

AI-Assisted Engineering

• Champion adoption of AI-assisted development tooling such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor, or similar
• Introduce practical automation opportunities across engineering workflows
• Support governance and quality controls around AI-generated code
• Encourage modern engineering practices and continuous improvement across the team

Mentoring & Team Development

• Mentor developers and support technical capability growth within the engineering team
• Promote strong engineering culture, accountability, collaboration, and quality standards
• Support knowledge sharing and adoption of modern cloud and AI-enabled engineering practices

Required Experience

• 10+ years commercial software engineering experience
• 3–5+ years operating in a Technical Lead, Team Lead, or Engineering Leadership role
• Strong experience modernising legacy enterprise applications and platforms
• Proven experience leading cloud migration or cloud-native development initiatives
• Experience working within enterprise-scale or regulated environments
• Strong stakeholder management and communication skills
• Experience leading mixed teams including permanent staff, contractors, and third-party vendors

Technical Environment

Candidates should demonstrate strong hands-on experience across:

• .NET / C#
• Azure cloud services
• CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
• Docker and Kubernetes
• API-driven and distributed architectures
• TypeScript, React, Node.js, or Python
• Automated testing and modern engineering workflows
• AI-assisted development tooling and engineering productivity practices

Desirable Experience

• Azure certifications (AZ-305, AZ-400 or similar)
• Event-driven architecture and messaging systems
• Serverless and cloud-native application design
• FinOps / cloud cost optimisation
• Experience implementing AI-enabled engineering practices in enterprise environments
• Insurance, financial services, or regulated industry experience
