About Blue J
Blue J is the leading solution in generative AI for tax experts. Our cutting edge, AI-driven tax research software is the best in the market, driving deeper, more efficient research answers for accountants and lawyers across North America and in the UK. We’re also an award-winning workplace whose success is intimately tied to our values-driven culture. We care deeply about our team’s experience at work, and our People team is obsessed with fostering and maintaining a collaborative, performance-driven, and happy environment for everyone who works here. We have just announced our Series C funding, and are looking for a People and Culture Coordinator to help us support our people as we enter into this exciting new phase of growth!
About The Role
As a People and Culture Coordinator, you’ll report into our Chief of Staff, Rose Duggan, and work closely with our Director of Talent Acquisition, Deb Goldfarb. As a relatively small team supporting a scaling business, you’ll touch all things people-ops.
About half of your time will be spent sourcing on the talent side (we’ll teach you how to interview!), and the other half will be spent on people operations and administration. Some of your responsibilities will include supporting employee onboarding and offboarding processes, event planning and coordination, building and maintaining our culture calendar, creating content for our employer brand, and jumping in to help on ad-hoc employee needs as they arise.
Our ideal candidate is someone who understands what motivates and engages people, and understands how that engagement is tied to business success. You’re highly organized, always do what you say you’re going to do, and appreciate that a great corporate culture is largely built on clearly communicated and well executed administrative processes. You’re looking to join a small company where scrappiness and a solutions-focused approach are key to success, and want to see the direct and immediate impact of your work. You’re motivated by collaborating with a hands-on team, and are looking to grow your career in People and Culture or operations by rolling your sleeves up and touching all aspects of the business. You’ll be a key part of building a world-class experience for our team, and we’ll support, coach and mentor you as you navigate this exciting next step in your career.

What You'll Be Doing
- You'll get to touch all parts of the People + Culture Function. Below is a general breakdown of the work you'll be doing, but we'll work with you to make sure you get opportunities where your skills and passion lie.
- Approximately 50% of your time will be spent sourcing talent for our growing team. You will be:
- Working with our recruitment team, proactively sourcing and identifying top talent
- Thinking of creative ways to attract top talent outside of LinkedIn and other traditional job boards
- (With training) doing some phone screens, acting as candidates’ first point of contact with Blue J
- Constantly staying on top of trends, and using AI and other tools to maximize efficiency and improve process
- Owning the onboarding and offboarding processes (shipping supplies, coordinating with hiring managers and other stakeholders, booking first meetings and introductory calls, etc…)
- Managing Blue J’s laptop fleet through Deel IT
- Acting as a coordinator for IT support (helping triage IT issues, connecting employees with the right person or company who can help, etc…)
- Office management (going to the office 1x/week to ensure the office experience is positive for all employees who use it)
- Own the employee handbook, ensuring that all information is current, accurate, and properly reflects our brand. Ensure signatures are up-to-date.
- Ensuring Blue J is compliant from a health and safety perspective
- In collaboration with the People and Marketing teams, create social media for our employer brand
- Ensure that our brand is consistently reflected across all platforms and channels
- Support with coordination for internal events, including company-wide and team events. This will sometimes involve being available to support with team events in-person at our Toronto office on an as needed basis
- Participate in Diversity and Inclusion initiatives, and consistently exhibit empathy and appreciation for all people's experiences
- Develop and maintain Blue J’s culture calendar, ensuring that we acknowledge, recognize, and/or celebrate what is important to our team members
- Support with learning and development initiatives, including sourcing learning resources for our team
- Proactively identifying resources, processes, or activities that could elevate the Blue J employee experience.
- You’re a people-person. You get your energy from connecting people and making sure they have what they need to be successful in their role.
- As a People and Culture professional, you see your colleagues as your internal clients. You proactively identify their needs, and constantly communicate to make sure your stakeholders are always informed and aligned.
- You have 2-4 years of experience working in the People Operations/Human Resources field, or in Recruitment. Generalist experience is an asset, but if you come from a specialized function and have an appetite to learn and grow (recognizing this may take some extra work), we'd still love to talk to you!
- You're creative and always looking for new ways to elevate the employee experience and brand
- You’re scrappy and solutions focused - if you haven’t done something before, you’re resourceful and do what it takes to figure it out
- As a member of our People and Culture team, you connect deeply with our core values and are excited about embodying and amplifying them every day
- You’re organized and detail-oriented
- You’re tech savvy and can quickly learn our HR tech stack
- An incredibly exciting and rare opportunity to be an early employee building out the people function at a rapidly growing company. We’re building a revolutionary tool from the ground up, and you will have a meaningful role in shaping the team that builds it.
- We are flexible! A lot of the time, you’ll be able to work remotely. We have an office in downtown Toronto that you’ll have to go into periodically to support our team, but there’s plenty of opportunity to work from home as well.
- We’re well-funded and offer competitive base salaries and stock options. You’ll play a crucial role in our growth, and it’s important to us that you share in our long-term success.
- We care about you as a whole person. You’ll have a healthy work/life balance and colleagues who respect it. We’ve mindfully put together a great benefits package that covers you and your family.
- We’ve got an amazing team. We’re mission-driven and motivated by success, but we’re friendly, we’re collaborative, and we care about each other. We’ve got all the start-up perks you’d expect, and are intentionally building a culture where you can pickleball if you want, feel safe to be yourself at work, and watch your career grow because your team has invested in you
- We are customer-focused
- We put the team interest before self-interest
- We are pleasant and playful
- We are open to better ideas
- We deliver on our promises
- We solve the toughest problems
What To Expect In The Interview Process
- We anticipate a high volume of applicants for this role. We are so excited to grow our team, and can't wait to find our perfect match! We would like to hire someone as quickly as possible to hit the ground running in January, and so will be reviewing resumes and trying to schedule some interviews before the holidays. We will do our very best to get back to all candidates by January 10th.
- All candidates must be eligible to work in Canada, and live within reasonable commuting distance of our Toronto office to be able to go in approx 1x/week
- Your first meeting will be with Rose, our Chief of Staff and Head of People + Culture
- Your second meeting will be with Deb, our Director of Talent Acquisition
- Your final meeting will be with Ben, our CEO
