The Mission

Backlight builds the tools that power modern media operations, from production and asset management to broadcast and streaming. Our products are used at scale across the media industry to move and monetize content.

As a product-minded fullstack engineer who leads with the frontend, you'll own end-to-end feature development in a React/TypeScript stack with light backend work in Python. You'll shape architecture, mentor engineers, and ship interfaces that feel fast and intuitive.

Responsibilities

  • Ship and maintain production-grade React applications with TypeScript and modern JavaScript.
  • Design responsive, accessible interfaces that prioritize performance and clarity.
  • Write and extend backend services in Python when your features require it (roughly 20% of your time).
  • Lead code reviews and set technical direction for frontend architecture.
  • Mentor engineers and contribute to how the team operates and improves.
  • Work directly with designers and product managers to define, scope, and deliver features.

Requirements

You have

  • 5+ years building and shipping web applications.
  • Strong command of React, TypeScript, and modern JavaScript patterns.
  • Comfortable working across the stack, including REST APIs, Git workflows, and light backend development.
  • You write clean, testable code and care about maintainability.
  • Experience mentoring others and working collaboratively in cross-functional teams.
  • Solid CSS skills, whether through frameworks or modern tooling.

Bonus points

  • Experience shipping SaaS products.
  • Background in frontend testing, performance optimization, or accessibility tooling.
  • Experience as a scrum master or in a similar facilitation role.
