What you'll do?

As Yomly grows, reliability engineering is increasingly central to our offering. You will join as we enter a significant growth phase of this focus, ensuring reliability, scalability, security, and performance for a rapidly growing platform serving 5000+ daily active users. As a Senior Reliability Engineer, you will significantly influence how our organisation thinks about:

• Monitoring and alerting: Shape the maturing of our monitoring solutions. Improve dashboarding to ease traversal across the tech stack and support reasoning around behaviours. Identify and fill gaps in foundational technologies instrumentation. Elevate the monitoring agenda over time towards customer experience monitoring and true SLO management.
• Security and auditability: Persisting the strong patterns already operated within Yomly, ensure that secure and accountable behaviours remain and mature in existing technologies and are considered with every platform change. Working alongside security professionals help embed tooling centrally in the development cycle, surfacing signals of risk earlier, shortening feedback loops, and easing collaboration. Additionally, collaborate to hone tooling for introspection production and enhance security systems.
• Developer tooling: Initially focusing on release and incident management optimisation. Growing to broader focus on enablement, simplicity, and velocity, delivering the most impactful improvements soonest. Opportunities to have an impact in such diverse areas as load testing, horizontal scalability design patterns, DORA metrics, release guard rails through to improving developer environments.
• Core platform: Lead oversight of our core AWS infrastructure, anchored in EKS and Aurora MySQL. Mature automation around release, scaling, and remediation. Deliver Infrastructure change as code. Champion designs that deliver our reliability goals.
• Coaching and enablement: The team will maintain ownership of critical capabilities however the agenda is one of enablement and devolution of action to the most suitable party. Accelerating development through self-support and simplification, our success will be measured by how rarely the teams around us need us to intervene. Teams act directly to iterate and advance the reliability agenda, confident in their approach.

Core role expectations:

• Extensive maturing of monitoring and alerting capabilities that fundamentally make engineering better.
• Bold, proactive curiosity to collaborate wherever there is an opportunity to simplify execution through monitoring and platform improvement, uncaring of whether the technology in question is familiar or not.
• Comfort investigating unfamiliar tooling, whether in-house or open source, and the ability to reason on behaviour from first principles.
• Solid enough background in software development to be able to gain an understanding of our partner development teams' working models and to be able to iterate successfully within team's code base.
• Sufficient experience of owning Kubernetes solutions to confidently lead the design and operation of our EKS platform
• Owning an AWS infrastructure, with experience of leading definition and operating of best practices around control of the ecosystem.

Development, service understanding, and tooling

• The ability to deliver capabilities that simplify development workflows and allow them to move faster with safety.
• Confident delivery of infrastructure codified.
• Experience working with application code bases to collaborate on improvements that progress the reliability agenda
• Experience enhancing and derisking release pipelines and deployment patterns

Reliability and incident

• Significant experience of working with a 24x7 environment service offering both in normal operation and incidents.
• Identifies and obtains the data that increases clarity for diagnosis of live issue
• A cool head under pressure and an ally for others in these moments.
• An eye for tools that will simplify patterns of resolution or eradicate root causes.
• Experience in early-life scale-up companies and the ability to evaluate potential improvements, identifying those that have the greatest impact at any moment.
• Experience in ensuring recoverability strategies are fit for purpose

Technical Leadership

• A passion for delivering improvements through automation and monitoring that showcase good practice and inspire others
• Confident collaborator, mentors engineers, and shares knowledge to build an internal culture of shared ownership of reliability.
• Champion for the customer experience and seamlessly navigates the balance between risk reduction and velocity.
