Role Overview

As a Java Backend Software Engineer at Centage, you will work closely with engineering, DevOps, and data teams to modernize and maintain the backend systems that power our financial planning and analytics platform. You’ll play a pivotal role in building scalable services, evolving data infrastructure, and re-architecting legacy systems for cloud-native performance and reliability.

This role involves deep contributions to API development, cloud-native backend services, and modernization of legacy ETL workflows—shifting from SSAS cube-based systems to a more modern MongoDB and microservices-based stack.

Requirements

Must-Have:

  • 5+ years of experience in Java backend development in a SaaS or cloud-native environment.
  • Strong experience building and deploying RESTful APIs, microservices, and distributed backend systems.
  • Deep knowledge of Java frameworks such as Spring Boot or Micronaut.
  • Hands-on experience with MongoDB and working knowledge of database modeling, query optimization, and performance tuning.
  • Experience working with AWS services (e.g., EC2, RDS, S3, IAM) and cloud-native architectures.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines (BitBucket pipelines, Jenkins) and Git-based workflows.
  • Comfortable integrating with Kubernetes-based environments and working with containerized applications.
  • Proficiency in backend scripting and automation (e.g., Bash, Python) for workflow orchestration and tooling.
  • Strong communicator, able to work cross-functionally with DevOps, product, and QA teams.

Nice-to-Have:

  • Experience modernizing legacy systems (e.g., SSAS cubes, monoliths) into microservice or event-driven architectures.
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure-as-Code tools (e.g., Terraform, Pulumi).
  • Exposure to observability tools like Grafana, Prometheus, or Sumo Logic.
  • Background in financial software, business intelligence, or ETL systems.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain robust Java-based backend services, APIs, and microservices.
  • Modernize and help replace legacy ETL pipelines (Jenkins + SSAS cubes) with scalable services integrated with MongoDB.
  • Manage and optimize AWS cloud infrastructure, including EC2, RDS, IAM, S3, and related services, ensuring high availability, performance, and cost efficiency.
  • Participate in incident response efforts, root cause analysis, and support operational stability in coordination with DevOps and support teams.
  • Contribute to and improve CI/CD pipelines to ensure smooth and automated delivery of backend services.
  • Help define and monitor SLAs, SLOs, and SLIs for critical services.
  • Author technical documentation, create runbooks, and advocate for best practices in backend development.
