Product Engineer - Trading (f/m/d)

Upvest, founded in 2017, enables any financial institution to offer great investment experiences to its customers. Upvest is an investment firm regulated by the German supervision authority (BaFin). The company currently employs 160+ people across Europe with its headquarters based in Berlin, Germany.

The company is backed by the world’s largest venture capital funds and investors including Bessemer Venture Partners, BlackRock, Earlybird, HV Capital, Notion Capital, and ABN Amro Ventures, as well as by renowned fintech entrepreneurs (including Maximilian Tayenthal, founder of N26, and Felix Haas, founder of IDnow).

We’re looking for fintech enthusiasts to join us in creating the financial infrastructure of tomorrow. We’re building the first European Investment API to enable any financial institution offering a wide range of efficient and transparent investment products, such as stocks and ETFs in nominal, portfolio, and fractional form. Our mission and vision is to make investing as easy as spending money.

We’re based in Berlin but are also open to hiring remotely in Germany or Estonia for this role. If you're currently based elsewhere but would like to move to Germany, we’re happy to support your relocation.

Your Mission

We are seeking an experienced backend engineer with a product mindset to help us build a securities API for financial institutions, the first such API in Europe.

Team's mission

Our team is on a mission to empower Upvest with a wide range of trading instruments for our clients. Current state of a Fintech world is that there’s no single standard and trading different assets come each with their nuances and complexities. We’re here to wrap it all, hide those complexities away and give it to our clients as a single and a first-class API. There are many challenges on the way there. As in not only scaling our product and software with the increasing number of trading venues, settlement flows and a variety of 3rd party integrations - but as well how can we serve millions of orders for millions of users in a scalable and resilient manner.

This Role Will Give You The Opportunity To

• Work with cutting-edge technologies (Go is the primary language) without a legacy codebase.
• Make an impact as we are ramping up the product.
• Work on improving the reliability of our API.
• Deliver fast and often. We embrace an agile methodology with a retrospective and demo at the end of the two-week cycle.
• Design and build fault-tolerant, horizontally scalable systems using a Microservice architecture powered by Docker, Kubernetes, LinkerD service mesh, and Kong as a Gateway.
• Build and operate event-driven applications using Kafka.
  
  

Job Requirements

• Prior experience with distributed systems.
• Experience in Go.
• Fluency with SQL databases such as PostgreSQL (transaction isolation, performance optimization).
• Fluency with event-driven architecture and concurrent algorithms.
• Proactiveness in learning new stacks and having a high sense of ownership.
  
  

It’s Nice If You Have

• Experience with Investment products or the Fintech domain, in general.
• Experience in event-driven architectures, event streaming, and event sourcing systems.
• Experience with Docker, k8s, understanding principles of a service mesh.
• Experience with operating services in a decoupled, event-driven system, leveraging modern observability tooling (e.g. monitoring and tracing).
