Junior Industrial Designer to prototype and build mixed-reality gaming hardware at Valo Motion
LOCATION: Lauttasaari / Primarily on-site
Are you excited to design real-world physical products that get people moving? Want to grow your skills in a fast-paced, collaborative team, building prototypes, testing ideas, and shaping the future of interactive gaming hardware?
We’re looking for a Junior Industrial Designer to take part in the full hardware product development process – from early sketches and CAD to full-scale prototypes and real-world testing.
Key points about the role at a glance
✅ Be part of building the hardware of our mixed-reality games – from sketches to physical prototypes.
✅ Hands-on role: You’ll build, test, and iterate prototypes together with our Lead Designer and Technical Product Coordinator.
✅ Based in Helsinki: 90% on-site at our Lauttasaari office due to the hands-on nature of the role.
✅ We’re looking for early-career industrial designers with 1–4 years of experience, who are looking to grow their skills in industrial design.
✅ Passion for industrial design and physical products: We are excited to see your strong portfolio showcasing hands-on design development and full-scale physical prototyping, whether from studies, work, or personal projects.
👋 Let us introduce ourselves quickly: our team is working at the intersection of gaming and physical activity. Our products ValoClimb, ValoArena, and ValoJump combine mixed-reality games with real-world physical challenges like climbing walls and trampolines, creating engaging gaming experiences that encourage people, especially kids, to move more, while having fun!
What is the role, and who would you be working with?
As a Junior Industrial Designer, you’ll play a key role in supporting the design and development of Valo Motion’s hardware products. You’ll get hands-on: building prototypes, testing ideas, creating CAD models, and helping to ensure our products are user-friendly, manufacturable, fun, and, most importantly, safe to use.
You’ll work closely with our Lead Industrial Designer and Technical Product Coordinator as well as the hardware team. The role is collaborative, but you’ll also have the chance to take ownership of design tasks and contribute ideas.
You’ll participate in design meetings, workshops, and user trials, helping to turn ideas into real-world products that delight players.
Your tasks include:
- Support the design and development of new gaming hardware products, focusing on usability, functionality, and aesthetics.
- Build and iterate physical prototypes to test and validate design ideas.
- Contribute to CAD modeling, mechanical design, and documentation for production.
- Collaborate on the improvement of existing products, refining details, materials, and user experience.
- Take part in co-creation workshops, innovation sessions, and user trials.
- Support final steps toward production and installation readiness
- Produce renders and animations for use by the development and marketing teams
Critical know-how that you’ll need to succeed in this role
✅ Experience & Portfolio: Ideally, you have 1–4 years of experience in industrial design from studies, projects, or work, and a strong portfolio showing your relevant skills. We are especially interested in seeing full-scale physical prototyping, the ability to identify and address user needs, attention to detail, a strong sense of CMF, and a fast, iterative approach to design through sketching.
✅ Educational background: You have a degree (or are nearing graduation) in industrial design from a university or UAS (AMK).
✅ Design skills & creativity: You have a good eye for form, proportion, details, and CMF (Color, Material, Finish). You’re curious about design trends and eager to keep learning.
✅ Hands-on prototyping & basic CAD Skills: You’re confident with basic CAD tools and enjoy working hands-on, whether it’s building, sawing, assembling, or bringing ideas to life through prototypes.
✅ Proactive & collaborative working: You’re enthusiastic, proactive, and ready to take on diverse tasks with a collaborative mindset.
✅ Location: This role requires 90% on-site presence at our Lauttasaari, Helsinki office.
✅ Bonus skills: Familiarity with digital manufacturing techniques is a plus.
