Java Software Engineer

We are seeking an experienced Senior Java Developer to support a major digital transformation initiative within one of Belgium’s most prominent banking institutions.

Logistics:

• Position: Freelance Senior Java Developer – Banking Digital Transformation
• Duration: 12-month rolling contract (extensions expected)
• Location: Brussels (Hybrid - 2 days on-site per week)
• Day Rate: €(Competitive & Negotiable)
• Languages: English (French or Dutch is a plus)
• Interview Process: 2 stages with fast feedback

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop and maintain high-performance backend systems using Java (11+) and Spring Boot
• Build scalable, event-driven architectures using Apache Kafka
• Design and secure APIs that interface with internal systems and fintech partners
• Work with MongoDB and other large-scale databases in cloud-based environments
• Contribute to service design, architecture decisions, and sprint planning
• Support DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud deployment strategies (Linux-based)
• Collaborate closely with business analysts, architects, and DevSecOps teams

Ideal Candidate:

• 6+ years of professional experience in Java backend development
• Production experience with Kafka and event-driven microservices
• Strong knowledge of MongoDB, relational databases, and performance optimization
• Experience working in cloud-first Linux environments
• Comfortable delivering in highly autonomous, senior-only teams
• Clear communicator who can contribute to technical discussions and align with cross-functional stakeholders
• Strong grasp of Agile, Git-based workflows, and CI/CD pipelines

Desirable:

• Familiarity with large-scale SaaS platforms or financial applications
• Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, or public cloud platforms (AWS/Azure)
• Background in regulated sectors such as banking, insurance, or telecom
• Knowledge of domain-driven design and secure software development practices
