Research Assistant Position: Chatbot for Academic Advising

The Information Systems program at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMUQ) is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Research Assistant to support the data collection efforts for an AI-powered chatbot designed to assist with academic advising.

Position: Part-time Research Assistant

Location: Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMUQ)

Duration: Summer 2025, with possibility of extension

Start Date: May 2025

Compensation: Competitive hourly rate

Project Overview:

The project aims to develop a conversational AI system that can respond to student queries about course selection, degree requirements, minors, concentrations, deadlines, and university policies. The chatbot will rely on accurate, well-structured advising-related data to deliver reliable and user-friendly support.

Responsibilities:

Identify, collect, and organize academic advising data from various sources (e.g., handbooks, course catalogs, emails, and forms)
Annotate and preprocess data to align with chatbot training requirements
Collaborate with faculty and academic advisors to verify and validate data accuracy and relevance
Document data sources, structures, and processing steps
Contribute to the creation of a structured dataset for chatbot training and evaluation
Support iterations and updates to the dataset based on evolving advising needs and feedback

Qualifications:

Strong organizational and analytical skills
Experience with data preprocessing and structuring (e.g., using Python, spreadsheets, or simple databases)
Interest in education technology, academic advising, or AI applications in higher education
Familiarity with NLP concepts or tools is a plus
Ability to work independently and communicate effectively with team members
