Technical Lead – Gaming (Technology Transformation)

About the Role

We are looking for a highly experienced Engineering Lead to drive the modernisation and transformation of a major gaming platform. This is a long-term strategic initiative requiring deep technical expertise and leadership to scale infrastructure, refactor monolithic systems, and lead large-scale migrations.

You will lead a cross-functional engineering team, ensuring that technical decisions align with business goals. This role requires someone who understands the complexities of large-scale system transformations, with prior experience in platform modernisation, high-impact engineering migrations, and preferably mobile gaming.

Key Responsibilities

🔹 Technology Leadership & System Modernisation

• Lead the decoupling of large monolithic systems into scalable, modular architectures.
• Drive major migrations in backend frameworks, databases, game clients, and cloud infrastructure.
• Oversee performance optimisation, infrastructure scaling, and technical debt reduction.
• Ensure engineering best practices for high-load, real-time gaming systems.

🔹 Engineering Strategy & Execution

• Define technical roadmaps, ensuring modernisation efforts are practical, scalable, and deliver business value.
• Lead architectural discussions on backend services, game engines, databases, and cloud platforms.
• Collaborate with Product & Business teams to ensure alignment between technical execution and commercial objectives.
• Set and enforce engineering excellence standards (CI/CD, DevOps, security, monitoring, and reliability).

🔹 Team Leadership & Mentorship

• Build, coach, and inspire a multidisciplinary engineering team working across backend, frontend, infrastructure, and game client technologies.
• Drive cross-functional collaboration with product managers, architects, and business leaders.
• Own team structure, onboarding, and capacity planning to ensure high performance and retention.

🔹 Stakeholder Management & Communication

• Act as a technical advisor to C-level executives, providing clear insights into risks, trade-offs, and opportunities.
• Ensure alignment across engineering, product, and business teams in defining and achieving modernisation goals.
• Effectively communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Technical Expertise

Having hands-on experience in the following areas will be highly valuable:

✅ Backend Development: Strong proficiency in Java (Spring Boot, microservices architecture).

✅ Frontend Development: Solid experience with React, TypeScript, and modern frontend technologies.

✅ Game Engines & Clients: Unity, Unreal Engine, or proprietary engines.

✅ Databases: MongoDB, PostgreSQL, MySQL, and NoSQL solutions.

✅ Cloud & Containerisation: Kubernetes (EKS), Docker, and cloud platforms (GCP preferred, AWS, Azure).

✅ CI/CD & DevOps: Strong understanding of automated pipelines, cloud deployment strategies, and observability.

✅ Scalability & Performance: Designing high-load, low-latency, real-time gaming platforms.

✅ Gaming Industry Technologies & Integration Patterns: Familiarity is a plus.

Preferred Experience & Qualifications

🎮 Experience in Mobile Gaming – Strong plus.

🎓 Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (Required).
