The Role As Lead DevOps Engineer, you will own the end‑to‑end design, implementation and continuous improvement of our cloud infrastructure and delivery pipelines. You’ll guide multidisciplinary Agile squads, embed DevOps best practices across development and operations, and ensure our microservices‑based platform is resilient, secure and scalable.
Key Responsibilities
  • Squad Leadership: Lead and mentor multidisciplinary Agile teams to deliver DevOps‑enabled solutions on time and to quality standards.
  • Microservices Deployments: Build, package and deploy microservice applications in line with 12‑factor app principles.
  • Infrastructure Automation: Define and implement Infrastructure as Code using Terraform and Ansible for AWS environments.
  • Container & Orchestration: Design, deploy and manage Docker containers on Kubernetes (and Rancher), ensuring high availability and efficient resource usage.
  • CI/CD Pipelines: Create and maintain GitLab CI/CD or Jenkins pipelines for automated build, test, security scans (Blackduck, Checkmarx, SonarQube) and deployment workflows.
  • AWS Architecture: Architect and operate AWS services—including VPC, EC2, EBS, Route 53, WAF, ALB/ELB, Network ACLs, Security Groups, KMS and S3—to meet performance, security and compliance requirements.
  • Monitoring & Observability: Implement application and infrastructure monitoring with Prometheus & Grafana; manage centralized logging with the ELK stack.
  • Web & Reverse Proxy: Configure and tune Nginx for traffic management, load‑balancing and SSL termination.
  • Performance & Reliability: Continuously assess system health, run capacity planning exercises, tune performance and execute disaster‑recovery drills.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Collaborate with product owners, architects, security teams and external vendors to define requirements, drive governance and manage release cycles.
  • Knowledge Transfer: Prepare runbooks, architecture diagrams and conduct training sessions; facilitate smooth transitions and handovers to support teams.
Your Profile Essential Skills & Experience
  • Senior DevOps Leadership: Demonstrable track record leading large‑scale implementations—ideally within complex government or regulated programmes.
  • Microservices Expertise: Extensive hands‑on experience in microservice development and deployment.
  • Containerisation & Orchestration: Strong proficiency with Docker and Kubernetes (plus Rancher).
  • Cloud Mastery: Deep working knowledge of AWS core services (VPC, EC2, S3, IAM, ALB/ELB, WAF, KMS, Route 53, Network ACLs, Security Groups).
  • IaC & Automation: Proven experience using Terraform and Ansible for repeatable, automated infrastructure deployments.
  • CI/CD & Security Scanning: Skilled in GitLab CI/CD or Jenkins pipelines, integrating tools such as Blackduck, Checkmarx and SonarQube.
  • Monitoring & Logging: Hands‑on with Prometheus, Grafana and ELK for telemetry, alerting and log management.
  • Scripting & Development: Development and testing experience in Python and/or JavaScript for automation tasks and custom tooling.
  • Linux Administration: Solid background in managing, tuning and securing Linux servers.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Excellent verbal and written skills; adept at engaging both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Agile & DevOps Culture: Comfortable driving change in an Agile environment and championing DevOps principles across teams.
Good to Have
  • Serverless & Advanced AWS Services: Exposure to Lambda, API Gateway, Step Functions, and advanced networking (Transit Gateway, Direct Connect).
  • Security & Compliance Frameworks: Familiarity with policy‑as‑code, GDPR, ISO 27001 or PCI‑DSS in cloud contexts.
  • GitOps & Policy Enforcement: Experience with GitOps workflows or policy tools (e.g., AWS Config, Open Policy Agent).
  • Collaborative Approach: Proven ability to work with Subject Matter Experts to shape solutions that meet user needs.
  • Transition & Handover: Experience delivering knowledge‑transfer sessions and comprehensive documentation for operational readiness.
