Your role and responsibilities

We are looking for a Software Engineer to join our team at ABB Oy Marine & Ports Division in Vuosaari, Helsinki. In this role, you will work on cutting-edge marine automation & control solutions, focusing on Azipod® propulsion control systems and other advanced technologies. You will be responsible for developing, testing, and commissioning control system software while collaborating with cross-functional teams in an international environment.

This role offers the opportunity to participate in developing new technologies and products, improving test processes and simulations, and ensuring high-quality system performance. The position involves occasional travel (both in Finland and abroad) to support project execution.

You will be mainly accountable for:

  • Developing and customizing software for automation and control systems, including PLC programming and HMI development
  • Working with Azipod® propulsion control systems, ensuring compliance with project requirements
  • Conducting internal testing, Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), and commissioning to verify system functionality
  • Diagnosing and troubleshooting issues, providing support to electricians or feedback to product teams when rectifying errors
  • Ensuring software quality and functionality align with project specifications
  • Participating in the development of test processes and simulations to improve system performance
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams, including hardware and lead engineers, project managers, and R&D

Qualifications for the role

  • B. Sc. or M.Sc. degree in Automation, Control, Electrical, or Software Engineering
  • Expertise in PLC programming and debugging, with an understanding of the IEC 61131-3 standard
  • Hands-on experience with control systems, including HMI development (both local panel solutions and larger control room systems)
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow electrical schematics and familiarity with key communication protocols, such as OPC UA, Modbus, and CAN
  • Strong problem-solving skills and proactivity in troubleshooting and system optimization
  • Capability to follow and interpret function descriptions and test protocols during application development
  • Fluency in English is necessary in the role
  • Willingness to travel (approximately 20–50 days per year) for testing, commissioning, and customer support
  • Previous experience in industrial automation or the marine industry is a plus and experience with drives, ABB 800xA, or other DCS systems is beneficial
