Job Title: Network Engineer II - 6 months extendable contract.

Location: 1101 E 33rd St, Baltimore, MD 21218

Work Schedule: Fully onsite for the first 2 months, then possibility to work 1-2 days per week from home.

General Summary/Purpose:

We are seeking a highly skilled Network Engineer II to plan, implement, and maintain network backbone infrastructures, including wireless technologies, to support a public safety department. This position requires moderate complexity network design, troubleshooting, and management for a variety of campus and enterprise-wide connected buildings. The Network Engineer II will also serve as a consultant to IT users, assisting with connectivity functions, traffic issues, and routing paths across the network. This role involves collaboration with internal teams, vendors, and technicians to maintain stable network functionality and manage technical projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Network Design & Implementation:
  • Plan and execute medium-sized technical projects from inception to completion, ensuring successful network solutions.
  • Design and implement network architecture, including wireless and security systems.
  • Install and configure medium-sized networks, ensuring proper connections to remote sites and verifying network performance.
  • Maintain and optimize campus-wide route and switched networks, ensuring stability.
  • Troubleshooting & Maintenance:
  • Analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve network issues in pressure situations, using network analysis tools.
  • Coordinate and solve moderately complex network issues escalated from tier-1 or tier-2 personnel.
  • Install and configure network analyzers to proactively monitor and manage network performance.
  • Project Management:
  • Develop detailed project planning documents to guide successful network projects.
  • Adhere to change management policies and communicate the risks and significance of proposed changes.
  • Successfully manage network projects, interfacing with a variety of stakeholders, including staff, vendors, and consultants.
  • Mentorship & Collaboration:
  • Provide guidance, training, and mentorship to junior staff, such as Network Engineer I, Analysts, and Network Technicians.
  • Collaborate with other IT teams to share best practices and learn about advanced networking technologies.
  • Customer Service & Communication:
  • Interface effectively with users, providing support and troubleshooting for network connectivity issues.
  • Present network plans, designs, and solutions to diverse audiences using professional communication tools.
  • Foster positive relationships with a broad customer base, ensuring high-quality customer service.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Experience:
  • Four years of experience in network engineering or a related field.
  • Additional Education/Experience:
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for education per the equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Arista and Cisco networking systems.
  • Arista Networks certification.
  • CCNP or CCDP certification.
  • Experience in networking for public safety or law enforcement agencies.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to execute project tasks within established schedules.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong documentation skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
  • Demonstrated track record of exemplary customer service.
  • Proficiency in TCP/IP, Ethernet, and OSI network models.
  • Experience configuring and administering networking protocols, such as DNS, DHCP, HTTP, FTP, and SSH.
  • Proficiency with networking tools like MRTG, Cacti, Solarwinds, and others.
  • Working knowledge of VLANs, MPLS, QOS, and other routing technologies.
  • Experience working with network security and monitoring tools.
