Java Engineer (eTrading) – Poland | Phi Partners

Phi Partners is the global market leader for capital markets technology services, placing technology and quant talent with the world's leading investment banks, hedge funds, and asset managers. We are expanding our presence in Poland and this is an exciting opportunity to join our growing Front Office & Risk Technology practice as part of that expansion.

The Opportunity

We're partnering with a leading North American bank on a multi-year programme to modernise their Front Office eTrading and risk infrastructure across Bonds, FX, Swaps, and Commodities. The bank runs an in-house derivatives and risk system powering their trading and eTrading infrastructure, and is now transitioning to a modular, microservices-based architecture on Kubernetes, expanding from their Toronto hub with a new New York presence.

This is a hands-on engineering role working closely with Traders, Quants, Risk, and Front Office IT, covering the full trade lifecycle across multiple asset classes. The FX Options business operates on its own in-house derivatives and risk platform, while other asset classes are progressively migrating to a shared containerised environment.

Roles & Responsibilities:

• Designing and developing backend components in Core Java with exposure to modern frameworks
• Working with messaging and middleware technologies to ensure efficient trade flow and data distribution
• Participating in system design, estimation, and architecture reviews
• Managing small development teams or projects independently, with strong stakeholder coordination
• Supporting and improving existing systems, reducing latency, and improving reliability
• Light UI development in React or Angular where required

What we're looking for:

Essential:

• Masters' / Bachelors degree (or above) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Informatics, or similar — highly preferred
• Strong enterprise Java (JDK 11+), with deep knowledge of JVM internals, memory management, garbage collection, and performance tuning
• Spring/Spring Boot, Hibernate/JPA
• Messaging and middleware: Kafka, JMS, Solace; caching: Redis, Apache Ignite
• PostgreSQL / SQL Server — schema design, indexing, and query optimisation for analytics workloads
• Hands-on experience with multi-threaded pipelines, large-scale data ingestion, and real-time analytics; Market Data systems and Front Office integrations a strong plus
• Demonstrable experience in capital markets, ideally in a Front Office or eTrading environment, with strong multithreading and concurrency management
• Solid understanding of Derivatives, Bonds, FX, and Swaps trading workflows
• Enterprise engineering practices: fault tolerance, scalability, logging, monitoring & telemetry, CI/CD, containerisation, Git, Maven, Jenkins
• Proven technical leadership, strong client-facing communication, and a problem-solving mindset — ideally with a track record of implementing pragmatic solutions under real-world constraints

Nice to have:

• Prior experience in eTrading or Market Making platforms as a Front Office Developer
• React or Angular
• AWS / Azure
